Apprenticeship to become a qualified carer with the AWO
Our new generalist care apprenticeship will make you into a genuine expert in all aspects of caregiving – from looking after children to care of the elderly. YOU will be the primary caregiver for people of all ages. You will need to have a keen interest in social affairs and the right attitude.
The apprenticeship usually lasts three years. It is broken down into theoretical and practical phases. You will spend most of your time in an AWO care home for the elderly and you will learn the theory in blocks of lessons that usually last a number of weeks. In addition to this, you will do some external placements in healthcare and childcare establishments. After three years, you will sit your final examinations (state-recognised) and will become a qualified carer.
You will receive instruction from experienced specialists from the field of care, and you will be responsible for managing the everyday activities of elderly people. The knowledge required by a carer also includes a broad-based, basic level of medical knowledge and you will also learn how to respond in a professional manner to the needs and requirements of people who require care. Because care is always a question of building relationships.
- You are interested in care, medicine, law and administration.
- You enjoy talking to and dealing with elderly people who need care.
- You have an „Abitur“ or a „Realschule“ school-leaving qualification, or another school-leaving qualification involving ten years of attendance, or a „Hauptschule“ school-leaving qualification plus two years of training from a vocational training college.
- German language skills at B2 level.
- Your final qualification is recognised across the EU. This means you can work as a qualified carer in many different countries across Europe.
- Working in the field of care, you will soon have opportunities for promotion and further training, for example to become a training instructor or to become a manager of a residential facility, a care provision service or other care establishment.
- With your training, you can then go on to do a university degree in Care Studies.
The pay during the apprenticeship is higher than in most other professions. Your salary will depend on the location of the care facility where you are based. Take a look for yourself at the high level of the salary during the apprenticeship, from the first year onwards.
